Bio
Kumi Korf was born in Japan but she has lived in Ithaca for the last 50 years. She received a BA in architecture from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and an MFA in printmaking from Cornell University. Her work involves several disciplines: architectural design, printmaking, painting, papermaking and artists' books, although she has been most interested recently in printmaking and artists' books. She teaches sculptural book workshops on both the east and west coasts. Her work is held by the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the Tate Library, among others.
Statement
Why do I choose to print? For me, the last act of creativity takes place on the etching press. Printmaking is a kind of alchemy that guides and magically transforms the invisible into concrete form, or image on paper. My tools and materials - copper plates, acid, grounds, resin, inks, paper, and press - all work together toward that exciting and addictive moment of pulling a first proof. My pulse still quickens every time I peel the paper from copper.
