Tim Merrick

Bio

A high school art teacher introduced me to etching.  The smell of the etching grounds and inks and the feel of the presses initiated me into a lifelong interest in printmaking.  I attended Rhode Island School of Design as a painting major, where every so often I would sneak up to the etching studio after hours to pull some prints.

I received a fellowship at the Contemporary Artist Center in North Adams, Massachussett and a residency at Sculpture Space in Utica, as well as a commission to work on the Route 86 bridge project in Ithaca.

For the past five years I have focused almost exclusively on etching, both in my practice and in researching the history of the medium.  I have participated in the summer workshop at Crown Point Press in San Francisco, taken classes at The Wells College Book Arts Institute, and taught introductory classes in etching at The Ink Shop in Ithaca, New York, where I am also a Printmaker Associate.

Education: BFA with honors, Rhode Island School of Design

Statement

Merrick prints rural and landscape images with salvaged roofing copper.  His use of expressive line work combined with negative space evokes the passage of time in the countryside.
