INK SHOP’S JULY PRINT CAMP 2009The Ink Shop Printmaking Center is offering special intensive workshops this summer for high school students and adults. This is an excellent opportunity for participants to create a portfolio of prints with the guidance of printmakers and artists in the community. No printmaking experience is necessary for all classes. Please bring your own lunch. The Ink Shop’s new location is at 330 E. State Street, the 2nd floor of the Community School of Music and Arts. Registration for a full week of workshops entitles you to an additional 10% discount.
WEEK 1: July 6 - 10 Introduction to Screen Printing Kadie Salfi Mo., Tues.,July 6 & 7; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. $300/$255 (+ $30 for materials) You will learn how to prepare your screen for printing, mix inks, register a three-color screen print and edition. The printing techniques we will explore will be: contact paper stencils, crayon block-out stencils and drawing fluid resist. It is not necessary to have any prior knowledge of screen printing or printmaking. After completion of the workshop, you will have a thorough understanding of the basics of screen printing. Supplies are included in this workshop! Please bring sketches or ideas to work on and are welcome to bring other materials such as wood and fabric to try printing on.
Introduction to Etching
Tim Merrick Learn hard ground and soft ground etching techniques on copper plates. We will be using a non-toxic etching bath. Proofing and printing will be taught. No printmaking experience necessary. Beginner’s welcome.
Matting Basics
Pamela Drix A hands-on practical workshop for anyone who needs to frame art that you have kept in the drawer too long. Learn how cut a window mat, float a print, hinge, and make two prints or works on paper to mat. Off-white acid-free mat board will be provided.
Basic Book Structures
Jamie Davis Books are containers, holding drawings, words, and information. In this class you will fold, cut, score, tear, and stitch your way to your own unique book. The class will focus on Pamphlets to make your own Sketch Book. This is an ideal class for both book arts beginners and experienced individuals looking for a fresh approach.

Jenny Pope Learn the basic techniques of making relief prints using MDF (medium density fiberboard)! We will focus on registration, mixing inks, and editioning a final print. No prior experience necessary. Good, professional tools will help make this class more enjoyable. Please contact us for recommended tool manufacturers.

WEEK 3 July 20 – 24
Gum Printing
Caleb Thomas Gum Printing, a process similar to lithography, is an easy method of transferring simple or complex Xerox images to a high quality rag paper. Class participants will be able to explore making multiple color prints, as well as draw or collage on the final print. For the first session, please bring at least 5 images to photocopy.
Introduction to InDesign Craig Mains This class in an introduction to the basic tools in InDesign. Learn how to place pictures and text in formatted pages, lay out a pamphlet or make a small book. This class is intended to give an overview on InDesign and teach how you can use it as an editing tool, a design tool, or a formatting tool. The class is designed to give individualized instruction and help solve problems you may have with this program.
Making Paste Paper
Instructor:
Christa Wolf Make your own paste paper using a cornstarch, water, and watercolor for pigment. This class is ideal for the beginning bookmaker and craft enthusiast. Patterns are created using stamps and other tools. These paste make great sketchbook covers.
